That’s not sweat, it’s my body crying…

That’s not sweat, it’s my body crying…
There is a huge amount of fitness and nutrition information available to anyone that wants it. I’m sure you know the score, you may have even read as many books, articles and websites as I have! So I though’t I’d post a little info on how I went about finding out more.

I wholeheartedly believe that knowledge is power and with that power comes the ability to change yourself. Anyone can do it, absolutely anyone – no excuses, the difference is just how we go about it. The body has set functions it needs to perform for you to survive and it’s what you do to help or hinder these functions that predominantly governs what you will look like and how you feel. (Now I know genetics, disability and disease also play a role here – which is why there isn’t really a ‘one size fits all’ health and fitness program – or we’d all be doing it, with perfect health and fitness!).

Things that have hindered my body:

Motivation - sometimes I just couldn’t be bothered to do anything. Feeling stuck in a cycle of being unhappy with myself, not really knowing what to do about it and in all honesty not really wanting to do anything about it. Becasue if I did, I would have done years ago. If you don’t want to wholeheartedly make a change then there really is no point in even starting anything as you won’t stick to it and you will more than likely slip further away from reaching what you think you want. Cruel perhaps, but true.

Allowing myself to believe what i’m doing to my body isn’t really that bad – the rubbish that is found in most food today really doesn’t help us to help ourselves. By not actively looking at what was in my food, or partaking in any kind of physical exercise and still wanting to change how I looked and felt, well it’s downright impossible!

Lack of information/incorrect information – anything sounds like it’s too good to be true, probably is! Losing weight and improving health and fitness isn’t a quick fix unfortunately, it’s a life-long commitment and needs to be something you can stick to for the rest of your life. I know I don’t want to eat cabbage soup for the rest of my life so anything promising quick results I ignored, once you go back to how you were eating before all the weight will go back on, plus more probably. Not to mention you won’t be getting all the important nutrients your body needs for daily functions.

Caring what other people think too much – you live in your body so it should be you that decideds what happens to it. Family commitments may leave you feeling in despair, but healthy eating and exercise can be a family event – you don’t have to eat alone or have your own ‘diet’ food cupboard! It’s kind of more about making smart food choices. Also included here is gym intimidation (something that still affects me a little I will admit!) Not everyone in the gym or out pounding the pavement is an Adonis, it’s more than likely they’re doing it for the same reason you are, so don’t let other people put you off doing something you want to do.

Things that helped:

Finding a goal – I think this is the first step to doing anything! If you don’t know where you’re heading how do you know if you’re going the right way? So really trying to visualise where you want to be, what you want to look like and how you want to feel.

Baby steps – trying to change to much all at once can be a bit of a shock to the system. If it’s weightloss (like it was for me initially) break the losses down into smaller milestones so that it isn’t too overwhelming and reward yourself at each milestone – with something non-food related! If it’s fitness the same applies, for example running was never my strong point. So I would walk for 5 minutes and jog for 2 for as long as I could. Then slowly decrease the walking period and increase the jogging time and eventually overall time.

Understanding myself – I enjoyed figuring out how my body reacts to certain foods and exercise, what made me feel good and what made me feel sluggish and unproductive. And once you know this for sure you can tailor make a program for you!

Sticking to it – No one feels amazing every day, we all have ‘fat days’ and social events that may take precedence over our routines of fitness and nutrition, and sometimes even when you’re trying to make the best choices you can out of what’s available they’re still not great in the grand scheme of things. But providing you can get to the end of the day and accept it hasn’t been ideal, get back on it and in the morning start afresh no matter what happened the day before – you will suceed.

Achieving the things that have helped me so far has taken time and research and I guess luckily it really interested me. The more you get into it and the more you find out, the more opportunities open up to you. It’s a good thing to obsess over! So things to start looking into could include:

How the human body works. Simple but useful!

Properties of foods and how your body uses/reacts to them.
Nutrients; what and how much your body needs of them and where you can find them.
Your daily pattern; when are you most likely to lose focus or slip up and why? So you can be prepared.
Types of exercuse that suit your level fitness and your ability and how you can incorporate them daily.

The key to reaching your goal is getting started, so why not start now?!
