How do I get fit ???
This may seem like a straightforward question
![]() James Davis AKA The Fitness Blogger However on closer inspection it is not as simple as at first it may seem. I asked myself this very question not too long ago. “How do I get fit” First you must decide how you define the word fitness. The word can be used to describe the mechanics of fitness; “The capability of the body of distributing oxygen to muscle tissue during increased physical effort.” The Oxford dictionary says fitness is “the condition of being physically fit and healthy” And the American Heritage dictionary goes further and describes fitness as “The state or condition of being physically sound and healthy, especially as the result of exercise and proper nutrition.” For me, being fit means being healthy, living longer and enjoying my life with my family. I knew my diet was not very good, in fact it I knew it was pretty bad , I did very little…..Ok.... I did no exercise and I was overweight. I was now an ex-smoker so that was a good start and I had also decided to give up the booze after a rather messy New Years eve party that I am still trying to get the wife to forget, so that was good too. I was a fitness blank canvas really, I had no previous history of playing sports unless you count my early primary school football days. I had never stepped foot into a gym before either in fact I did not own a pair of of running shorts and my trainers were purely for fashion!! I drove to work and rarely walked further than the local chip shop, my job was very un-active and office based. So where do you start? For me the first thing I did was buy a few fitness magazines and tried to make sense of them all…. I was instantly put off by pictures of male adonis’s with rippling pectorals and six pack abs! The fitness magazines seemed geared for guys who had a sporting background, the chap who played sunday league football or had been on the rugby team at university, they knew the difference between a bicep and a tricep, drank protein shakes and knew there way around the gym. I was definitely NOT one of these guys!
So then I went to my computer and did a Google search, the main "health and Fitness" search terms were being dominated by the two big mens magazines I had just been reading!! More searching and I found websites that promised a cover model body in six weeks, just pay $47.00 for an e-book, fill in a form and get this free report on weight loss.. Ten top tips on how to gain muscle..just give us your e-mail address... there was so much information and no way of knowing if any of it was true! Most of the websites were just full of adverts, I had cookies and pop-ups coming out of my ears! I just wanted some no-nonsense, non-corporate, honest health and fitness advice…
I also knew that I wasn’t alone, and that there were thousands of other lapsed fitness-fans whose youth may have been behind them but still wanted to take action and get fit and healthy and become “Born Again Athletes” And so Fitness Blogger UK was born, at first as a personal fitness blog to chart my own fitness journey. Then I soon found other health and fitness bloggers that were keen to share their experiences and offer me help and advice. Fitness Blogger UK now provides an online community, a place for fitness novices, athletes of all levels and those in the fitness industry to meet and exchange ideas and offer advice on all things health and fitness related. Whether you simply want to shed a few pounds, and enjoy a kick-about with your children, or if you have bigger plans to take on a marathon or two, then Fitness Blogger UK is the place for you.
